When we get to Bonecarver’s hut, Stor doubled over in pain. Apparently something he ate didn’t agree with him. We left him there as we descended the steep chute/stairway into the bowels of the ice. The very slippery and steep stairs are too much for Mordaxis, who slipped through my fingers as I tried to save him. He landed in a heap in a large room with baskets full of frozen fish. We figured out that some of the bundles of fish are partially rotten shark meat wrapped in sharkskin. After some exploring, we were in a circular corridor with a radius of more than 100 feet.
We investigated toward the center of the circle, and heard Kobolds talking and going about their domestic business. We decided to leave them alone and instead go outward. In a giant cavern, hundreds of feet long and a couple of hundred feet wide, we found a ship with the sails raised. Much too big to fit through the entrance. All around the ship were frozen people and creatures, including two 12-foot tall, shaggy, fur-covered beings and a giant squid arranged lengthwise along the wall. As we approached the ship, we noticed a chest of gold and jewels. Natalia noticed that the ship is not constructed right, and doesn’t look sea-worthy. This looks like a trap to us, so we left the chest there and did not approach too closely.
The next corridor we investigated was well-travelled, and after some convolutions, we found a great big tent on the ice in the middle of a large cavern. As we approached it, we heard something behind us. Turning, we found what looks like a white troll that almost perfectly blended with the ice stalactites in the corridor. Mordaxis did his best Emperor Palpatine impression, and the rest of us beat the troll down, but it got up. Se we beat it down again, and it got up again. Rinse. Repeat. Eventually, we dumped oil on it and burned it.
I called into the tent, where I could hear noises, that we didn’t come to hurt anyone, but we are hunting the dragon. A Tiefling came out of the tent and told us that we are crazy to hunt a dragon. turns out that this is Makath the Crimson, the scholar that we seek. She took us into the tent, where it was warm and pleasant, with lots of scrolls, books, and comfy carpets. After talking to her, it turns out that she’s working for the white dragon decoding and translating ancient magical treatises. She claimed that the Drachorn was taken by a bunch of guys in purple robes. We never find exactly what we’re looking for.
After some talking, we decided that we’d have to attack the dragon. If we try to take Makath away, the will attack us on the boat and it will have all the advantages. If we stay here, eventually it will find us and kill us. We need to take the initiative and attack.
Makath gave us a ring of cold resistance that I took to wear and two arrows crafted to harm the dragon (dragon slaying). She also agreed to show us a back way into its lair, but can’t come with us to face it.
As we passed through the scriptorium, Mordaxis looked around and found a bunch of scrolls:
gaseous form, haste, protection from energy, water breathing, evard’s black tentacles, fire shield, wall of fire, hold monster, chain lightning, disintegrate.
In the scriptorium is a 15’ wide chute straight down with claw marks. The dragon climbs up this chute to visit Makath. We affixed a rope attached to a grappling hook.
At the bottom of the chute, we found ourselves standing on a cliff overlooking a roiling mist. A voice from the mist said “I’ve been waiting for you.” I traded barbs with the dragon and challenged it. Mordaxis read a scroll, and sent a fireball into the mist, driving the mist away and revealing the dragon. Feng shot one of the arrows of Dragon Slaying right into the dragon’s eye, causing a terrible wound. There was puss. Ew.
The dragon breathed icey mist at us, freezing us; and then tried to frighten us with it’s terrible countenance, but Bahamut kept the fear at bay for Nat, Feng, and I. I was standing at the edge of the 20 foot cliff, confronting the dragon, when suddenly the ice beneath my feet began to shift and rise. The cowardly beast was trying to place a wall of ice between me and it, but I chose to slide down the cliff, closing on the beast, rather than let it hide.
Feng tried to shoot it with the other arrow of Dragon Slaying, but he missed his shot. While Natalia gracefully dove from the cliff to join me in confronting the beast face-to-face, Mordaxis raised a ring of fire around the beast, but it jumped straight up and out of the trap. It seems like every time one of us acts, the beast takes another swipe at me with it’s ponderous tail, but by the Grace of Bahamut I was able to heal from the wounds that it had inflicted and strike a mighty blow to the beast.
Mordaxis tried to disintegrate it with his magic, but failed to affect it. However, between the many arrows shot by Feng, the terrible blows delivered by me and Natalia, and the fire rained down upon the beast by Mordaxis, it eventually tried to run away. I reached out and stabbed it with my sword as it turned from me, and Bahamut guided my blow, killing the beast before it could escape to cause more mayhem. It’s mighty death cry could be heard throughout the giant iceberg.
We found its pile of treasure nearby.
20 gems: 5 each of 200gp, 400 gp, 600 gp, 800 gp
fur lined cloak of warmth and protection +2, Feng claimed it.
As we are counting the hoard, some ice trolls wandered into the room. I told them “Thus is the fate of all evil dragons!” Seeing their evil overlord slain, they ran for their lives.
On our way out, we ran into 25 kobolds, who ran at us, murder in their eyes. Mordaxis burnt them all to a crisp with one fireball.
We went back up and told Makath to pack her books. Meanwhile, we investigated the rest of the facility. The treasure chest on the trophy ship yielded:
2 gems worth 200 gp total
We found another trophy room full of frozen giants. We found a room of ice toad bureaucrats that we talked to about what they are going to do now, they don’t know. We discovered the ice troll barracks with three frightened ice trolls. We talked to them and let them live. In the storeroom, we replenished our supply of oil and rope. We used some of the supplies and some tapestries to create a sled and sling for the treasure and the books that Makath is bringing back with her. We were not disturbed while winching the books and chest of gold to the surface and then to the ship.
The stout ship and sailors got us back to civilization in good order. We gave 100 gp to crew to have a few drinks on us.
